We recently designed and built "Rose Cottage" to accomodate our senior stage in life. All that we need is on the main floor (1134 square feet), with no-step entrances front and back. In addition, there is a second large, sunny bedroom upstairs and a spacious lounge and second bathroom.

We have plans for winter 2006 and two exchanges for 2007. Our interest now is for 2008 and later. We prefer the variety offered by a larger centre, or by a smaller city/town that is near a major centre. A resort area is less likely as an interest. We like to walk to do sightseeing. We are not active in sports.

The weather is usually good in Victoria in September and October. Our climate is the same as Seattle, which is about 80 miles south, so our winters are very mild compared to eastern Canada and northern U.S. We are in a "rain shadow", and get less precipitation than nearby Vancouver on the mainland.

Our house is designed and furnished in the style of the 1920-1940's houses nearby. The rose garden in front, and the "Cloister Garden" at the rear, enhance the cottage atmosphere. A recent visitor, however, commented that it looks more modern inside than outside. We have used traditional furnishings but the "modern" part is the large open spaces and windows.

Victoria is rated as one of the most desirable retirement cities in North America, and is a popular tourist destination. We were surprised how many people interested in renting or exchanging with us have been here before, and want a longer return visit. Vancouver Island is lush and beautiful with many tour choices. The west coast of the island has sections of temperate rain forest.

Though located in the city itself, the view from our covered back veranda is more like a village scene. We chose a quiet neighbourhood that has a gentle terrain for safe, interesting walking routes. But, we are also close to things: picturesque Oak Bay village centre is only a 15 minutes stroll along the quaint Oak Bay Avenue, with its many resturants and shops. Bus routes are 2-3 blocks from the house. Walk-in medical clinic is four blocks away.

Our hospital is reached with a 5 minute drive. The large and well-equipped Oak Bay Community Center has a gym and pool as well as many activities and courses. Also nearby, Monterey Seniors' Center offers interesting activities and fellowship. A branch of the Victoria Public Library shares this building.

We plan to rent out the house a small part of the year, as well as do exchanges or travel to places where we are renting. (See details and photos on Cyberrentals.com, property no. 127769.) Summer exchanges are unlikely for us, though we have one lined up where the other couple also lives on the West Coast.

We are in our early 60's, and retired some years ago from teaching and business management careers. When we visit your city or town, we will be interested in walking, galleries, cultural events, and public gardens. We would like an English speaking location, or an area where English is spoken enough that we do not have a problem communicating. Both of us have an appreciation for beauty and order, and will keep your home in immaculate condition.

We have a 2001 Nissan Sentra automatic if we plan to trade cars.

Our house is smoke-free, pet-free. No small children, please. We are open to many possibilities, and all requests will be answered.
