We are an active older couple, looking for a simultaneous home exchange for 10 to 12 months beginning preferably around March 1, 2010, in the Waterloo-Kitchener area of Ontario, where our son and his family live. Colin is a retired paleontologist, and Isobel is a former science teacher and pastor. We would be happy to take care of pets, plants and gardens. It would be nice but not necessary to be near a library, a university, and places for gardening, canoeing, hiking and/or cross-country skiing.

In return we offer you our comfortable 50-year-old four bedroom bungalow in Bells Corners, a quiet suburb of Ottawa, Canada. The house has large decks at side and back, L-shaped living-dining room with wood stove fireplace, master bedroom, bedroom/den, large family/bedroom, kitchen and 1½ bathrooms on the main level, and a large basement that has been partially renovated to include an additional bedroom and powder room, and a recreation area with a pool table and table tennis table. Appliances include stove, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer. We also have cable TV, VCR and DVD players, internet access, a piano and a large library of books and videos. Much of the lawn has been replaced by garden shrubs, perennials and ground cover. A 20-foot screened-in gazebo that we attach to the house in spring looks out onto our pesticide-free raspberry patch and the fields and woods of the Green Belt. No smoking inside please. The house is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, churches, a health clinic, dentists, a public library, parks, a municipal swimming pool, an indoor ice arena, and public transportation. Several hiking and skiing trails, including the 220-mile-long Rideau Trail, are accessible from the back door. We are 20 minutes drive from Parliament Hill. A 2007 Honda Fit may be available as exchange. One of our daughters lives 10 minutes’ walk away, and another lives a 15 minute drive away. They can assist with information if necessary. As the capital of Canada, bilingual Ottawa has much to offer visitors by way of culture, recreation and entertainment - three universities, several major museums, the National Arts Centre, several theatre companies, the National Library, the Mint, The National Art Gallery, the Houses of Parliament, the scenic and historic Rideau Canal, farmers’ markets, bicycle paths, parks, and cosmopolitan dining. As Ottawa is a small city of about 850,000, all of these amenities are easily accessible. And for nature lovers, hikers and skiers, the Gatineau Hills are a half-hour’s drive away.
